The satisfaction of twanging the wire

I've been playing the guitar for about 28 years now. God, I must be getting old.

I've only ever played for fun (although I must declare the £15 I once got for a gig so that must qualify for 'semi-pro').

'King's Sedgemoor Drain' Live at The Bull, Hinton. 1988.

I've picked up quite a lot of music over the years, mostly folk/rock type stuff also quite a bit of comedy. I also like playing classical music which is best described as 'hard'.

I prefer to play acoustic although I do have an Alvarez electric guitar. Being more of a finger-picker and my lead technique being at best basic, this has mostly been used to bang out a rhythm in one or two rock bands I've been involved with. ( Nope, no-one you've ever heard of ).

It's surprising just how addictive guitar playing can be. Even after all these years I still get withdrawal symptoms if I don't get it out for a twang at least three times a week !

Playing the guitar was something I always wanted to do. When I suggested this to my music teacher at school I was strongly urged to try "something more melodic" and I was presented with a battered old violin. After scraping away at this for about eight months and completely failing to saw right through it, this idea was abandoned but I still didn't get to play the guitar.

It wasn't until 1977 that I bought my first guitar and started to learn the basics. I was working with someone who played to a high standard and got a lot of help from him.

Other than that I'm pretty much self taught which means, having picked up every bad habit under the sun, I'll never be a great guitarist but it's still a lot of fun.
