The River Frome rises in Dodington Park in South Gloucestershire from where it covers its short but very scenic course to its confluence with the River Avon at Bristol city centre.

The Frome passes through the villages of Old Sodbury, Chipping Sodbury, Yate, Iron Acton, Frampton Cotterell, Winterbourne, Bromley Heath and Frenchay then into the suburbs of Bristol via Stapleton, Eastville and Baptist Mills. Much of its final journey is now underground but it emerges briefly in Riverside Park and Castle Park before its final hidden section under the Centre where it empties itself into St Augustine's Reach.

It is by any measure a short river. The Frome covers a mere 22 miles including all of its plentiful meanders. It is fast flowing for the majority of its life, such that a water molecule starting its journey in Dodington Park would arrive at Bristol Harbour in just a few hours.

The Frome has always played a part in my life. As a small child I was regularly taken for walks and fishing trips to Moorend, Frenchay Bridge and Snuff Mills. Where I now live the Frome and several of its tributaries pass quite close to my house.
